ALL-COMM Technologies, Inc. recently completed a Tactical Communications Unit (TCU) conversion built on a 2004 Ford Excursion Chassis for the Boston Fire Department. The TCU was donated to the department by Denis Leary and the Leary Firefighters Foundation, Inc. of New York.
The TCU features many innovative communications and support devices which include the operations equipment that can be powered by the 5KW Raven engine mounted generator, shore power or the built in UPS provide by the Xantrex Heart Interface unit for stand alone energy. Among the many communications and electronics devices on board the TCU are the ability to achieve interoperability thru VHF, UHF and 800 MHz radio equipment controlled by the ZERTON 4010R Console. The Eventide digital recorder records all radio traffic on sixteen channels for storage and instant replay. In addition to being able to communicate and monitor on all four Boston Fire repeated operational channels, their inputs, Mutual Aid and surrounding jurisdictions frequencies thru dedicated individual speakers, an on board QUANTAR repeater with a signal splitter and 200’ portable deployable antenna system is utilized for below grade incident communications such as transit tunnels where radio signals may be weak.
The TCU is equipped with a digital microwave receiver, which allows digital video transmitted from the Massachusetts State Police Helicopter to be received and displayed on a monitor in the rear of the unit.
